Biography
Born and raised in South Georgia, Sierra Fenton spent the majority of her childhood outdoors and in a sketchbook. Her early experiences became a catalyst for her creative endeavors. Sierra’s father managed a cattle operation where her and her brothers were occasionally drafted as extra hands. Later her parents established a horse transportation business which presented her the opportunity to travel all over the country. All the while she maintained a fixation with drawing and studying art.
A lifetime steeped in the rural countryside and agriculture of the south, coupled with extensive cross country travels allowed her to experience a vast variety of landscapes and colorful characters from all walks of life. From an early age, this exposure has cultivated a deep respect for the land and the folks and critters that tend it. Her studio work is a reflection of that appreciation, drawn from personal experiences, collecting stories, painting and sketching on location and collaborating with working ranches and homesteads.
Her initial interest in fine art was sparked by her late grandfather’s western paintings hanging in her home. He gifted Sierra her first art supplies and encouraged her initial artistic pursuits. In college she studied Advertising and Graphic design at the University of Georgia, but returned to fine art after starting a family following graduation. Eager to continue learning she is currently enrolled with Watts Atelier of the Arts in order to bolster her training.
She credits her children for her discovery and love of plein air painting. Quickly outgrowing a small home studio with the addition of two energetic little boys Sierra began setting up her easel outside to give the kids room to roam while she worked. This concession immediately became a passion which has become an indispensable part of her practice. In addition to the wealth of beauty and embracing challenges presented when painting outdoors, she is also inspired by observing her children’s curiosity in nature as they grow.
Sierra is a member of Oil Painters of America, and Booth Artist Guild at the Booth Western Art Museum. Her studio is currently based in Cleveland, Georgia. She teaches classes in North Georgia and participates in plein air events and exhibitions throughout the Southeast. Her work has found homes with collectors across the country.
